Jimmy Lakey, a Republican running for the nomination in congressional district 7, has not been registered to vote for approximately the last 16 months.
Lakey, a former talk-show host on 710 KNUS, blames a postal error for the lapse in registration.
"In 2009, we [Lakey and his wife] sent in via postal service, our voter registration into Jefferson County, and only in the last week or so did we learn that those never got recorded," Lakey said in a phone interview with CompleteColorado.com. Lakey said as soon as he learned of the situation, he went to the Jefferson County Clerk & Recorder's office to register in person. While there, Lakey says that the office told him that faxing a voter registration was more reliable. "By all accounts, it was a postal error."
Lakey added that the issue never rose to his attention in 2009 because it was an off-year election, and as he was attending to multiple details in his move from Weld County to Jefferson County, he says he just wasn't running to the mailbox every day to find his registration.
Lakey also told CompleteColorado.com that he did vote in the 2008 general election by mail, although Weld County records show his last vote was recorded in November of '06.
