Number of food stamp households doubles in 4 years

The number of Colorado households using food stamps has doubled since 2008.

This chart, obtained from the Colorado Department of Health and Human Services, shows roughly 109-thousand households enrolled in the “SNAP” program on a monthly average in fiscal year (FY) 2008.

By the end of FY 2012, the monthly average doubled to just over 220-thousand.

The upward trend was continued in 5 of the last 6 months for which the enrollment figures were available.

The numbers mirror national trends, as it was recently reported that the number of individuals as well as households nationwide using foodstamps had reached all-time highs.
