DENVER – A former member of the Colorado state GOP leadership appears to be testing the waters for candidates to primary the sitting Republican in what is considered one of the country’s most sought-after congressional seats by Democrats in 2026.
Darcy Schoening, who acted as “Director of Special Initiatives” under former Colorado Republican Party Chairman Dave Williams has been drumming up support on the social platform Signal for a primary opponent against 8th Congressional District incumbent Gabe Evans, throwing out the names of at least two Republicans as contenders.
In a thread on July 20 Schoening, who lost a recent bid to become state party chair, wrote: “Poll for CD8: John Fabricatore or Adam DeRito? Respond with your choice. This is not a hypothetical question, and your response is necessary…I am demonstrating a point. Important to respond. Who can beat Gabe? Answer honestly what’s the best choice here?”
Fabricatore is a former U.S Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent. He also unsuccessfully ran for Congressional District 6 in 2024, losing to Rep. Jason Crow by about 70,000 votes. He does not currently reside in CD-8.
DeRito is relatively new to Colorado politics, and serves as a district captain for the Weld County Republican Party. Sources close to DeRito told Complete Colorado that he has said he will not run for CD-8, despite Schoening’s desire to see him on the ballot.
Complete Colorado tried to reach both Fabricatore and DeRito for comment, but received no response. It is not clear what “point” Schoening is trying to demonstrate, but some who have seen this scenario play out before say it’s a page out of Rocky Mountain Gun Owners president Dudley Brown’s political playbook. For years Brown would put up opponents against incumbents when the sitting Republican wasn’t fully on-board with his agenda, often costing Republicans a seat because his choice of candidate was simply too extreme.
Dave Williams worked for Brown during many of these election cycles.
CD-8 on the national stage
Well known political analysts and party leaders say knocking off Evans in a primary would all but automatically hand the seat over to Democrats in the general election.
CD-8 is among the most sought after, and winnable races for Democrats, who held the seat in its inaugural session from 2022-2024, under Yadira Caraveo, who has announced her intent to run again, along with a slew of other Democrats including current state Treasurer and former House District 50 Rep. Dave Young, of Greeley.
Hotline’s 2026 “House Power Rankings” puts the seat among the most competitive in the country.
Schoening, et al are upset with Evans over his introduction of the Dignity Act, which among other things would give some undocumented immigrants a pathway to earning legal status.
Those opposed say the bill is a back door support for illegal immigration.
“This crowd would rather lose a general election that nominate somebody that doesn’t fit their pure image of what a candidate should be,” said Dick Wadhams, a former Colorado Republican state chairman who also managed the successful campaigns for U.S. Senator Hank Brown, U.S. Senator Wayne Allard and Governor Bill Owens. “The 8th Congressional District is going to be the hardest district to keep in the nation.”
Wadhams said while Democrats are in disarray at the moment, this will be a competitive election.
“Democrats (nationally) — whomever wins that primary — are going to pump millions of dollars into that general election,” Wadhams said. “Republicans (nationally) will walk away from this seat if someone from the extreme wing of the party is nominated.”
Newly elected vice-chairman of the Colorado Republican Party Richard Holtorf agreed, calling it a political chess game and a fool’s errand. Holtorf said if Republicans want to lose this seat, the most sure-proof way to do so is to primary Evans.
“If we have sitting incumbents, we should support those sitting incumbents,” Holtorf said. “It would be in our best interest as Republicans to put our entire weight and effort into supporting Republicans in those seats and protect them from the Democrat onslaught that is forthcoming, which will be a national, multi-million dollar effort.”
