DURANGO–An man was assaulted at a Nov. 7 Fort Lewis College student government meeting, where a previous decision to deny a Turning Point USA (TPUSA) chapter on campus was overturned. While the man is not pressing charges, this is but one of several acts of aggression towards members and supporters of TPUSA in Colorado as of late.
TPUSA was founded by Charlie Kirk, who was publicly assassinated at Utah Valley University in early September. The national organization now has chapters in numerous Colorado colleges and high schools with the goal to empower “the next generation with the tools and knowledge to defend and promote conservative values on campuses across the country,” according to their website.
As previously reported by Complete Colorado, the Associated Students of Fort Lewis College, a four-year, public liberal arts college in Durango, initially denied a petition by senior Jonah Flynn, and other students to formally recognize a campus TPUSA chapter.
Following a letter to the college urging approval from the Colorado House Republicans, and a student-led counter-petition, an emergency meeting was quickly called and the student governing body unanimously voted to reverse the original decision and approve the chapter.
After the approval vote, David Peters, 66, was cheering along with other TPUSA supporters when, according to a campus police report, Fort Lewis College student, Megan Mollett, began screaming “f*ck you” repeatedly. Mollett then turned towards Peters and “gave him the finger,” states the report. Peters took out his phone to take a picture of Mollett, when she came closer and hit both his hand and his phone.
Mollett was detained by police who explained to her that she “could be charged with harassment or assault.” However, Peters, who was not injured during the altercation, is not pressing charges. Rather, he told police he wants the college to take disciplinary action.
While student discipline outcomes is protected under federal privacy laws, Fort Lewis College told Complete Colorado that they are taking the matter seriously.
“I can say that the college takes all allegations of misconduct seriously and follows established disciplinary procedures,” said Nardy Bickel from the college president’s office.
Police ushering Mollett out of the crowd can be seen at the beginning of a video obtained by Complete Colorado.
The video goes on to spotlight the extreme reaction of a Fort Lewis College professor emeritus, David Kozak, who is seen flipping off the camera and calling TPUSA supporters “nazis” following the chapters approval meeting.
Colorado has seen multiple other instances of hostility and opposition toward TPUSA, including the assault of CU Boulder TPUSA member who was struck with a hockey stick, and two high school chapters in Eagle County that were fiercely opposed by a petition and social media-led backlash.
