WASHINGTON, DC–The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) is targeting Colorado’s 5th Congressional District as a potential flip seat in 2026 as part of their efforts to retake the House of Representatives. The GOP-held district, which covers most of El Paso County, including the cities of Colorado Springs, Monument, Manitou Springs and Palmer Lake, among others, has never elected a Democrat in the more than 50-years since its creation.
The current representative, Jeff Crank was elected in 2024 over Democrat opponent River Gassen by 14 percentage points, while President Trump won El Paso County by 10 points. As of 2023, the district represents roughly 727,000 Coloradans.
The DCCC recently announced their offensive plan to retake the House, targeting seats in Colorado, Virginia, South Carolina, Minnesota, and Montana, among others. All told, the DCCC lists 44 districts “that Trump won by 13% or less, and reflect a sustained, dramatically positive political environment where Democrats are overperforming in all special elections since Trump was inaugurated” the announcement reads.
Democrat Jessica Killin is widely considered the primary election front-runner to take on Crank in the November general election. Killin, an Army veteran and chief of staff to former vice-president Kamala Harris’ husband, Doug Emhoff, has been endorsed by big Democrat names such Diana DeGette and Sen. Michael Bennet.
Jesse Mallory, Colorado state director for Americans for Prosperity (AFP) says the Democrats’ efforts are rooted in false confidence. “I wish them the best in trying to do something that they are not going to be able to do,” Mallory told Complete Colorado. “They know she [Killin] can’t win, they’re just hoping the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) spends money somewhere else.”
Crank previously worked as a regional director for AFP, and has been endorsed by the grassroots conservative group.
Crank’s campaign reports starting the year with $1 million in the bank, having raised $300,000 in the last quarter.
In contrast, Killin reported $1.1 million in cash on hand to start the new year, having raised $610,000 in the previous quarter, $270,000 of which she donated to herself.
“Congressman Crank won his first election in 2024 easily, he’ll win again in 2026,” The Crank campaign’s senior advisor, Nick Trainer, told Complete Colorado. “Washington DC Democrats have one of their own running in Colorado, so it’s not surprising that the Biden team is engaged.”
Along with the 5th Congressional District, the DCCC has also targeted Colorado’s 8th Congressional District, currently held by Republican Gabe Evans.
