The inaugural episode of the Independence Institute*-produced education podcast Learning Curve, features hosts Erin Brantley and Ross Izard bridging the gap between the K-12 policy making process and real world experiences of parents navigating Colorado’s public school bureaucracy.
Brantley is a Colorado parent and longtime political activist, while Izard–founder of Xiphos Strategies–brings years of experience as a policy analyst, having worked on education legislation and reforms across the country. Together they explain that education policy has become increasingly complicated, with laws, regulations, and decisions coming from numerous sources such as the state legislature, school districts, state board of education, and federal agencies. While political insiders may follow the process closely, many parents feel disconnected and only notice the effects after changes are implemented.
The two note that understanding whether an issue originates at the school board, district, or state level is key for those who want to advocate for change, urging parents to take a seat at the table rather than being excluded from decisions that affect their kids’ education.
