Michael Bennet, John Hickenlooper petition on to primary ballot

DENVER The Colorado secretary of state’s office on Tuesday announced that Democrat candidates John Hickenlooper and Michael Bennet have qualified for the June 30 state-wide primary ballot after submitting sufficient petition signatures.

Hickenlooper is running for re-election to the U.S. Senate in November, while Bennet, a sitting U.S. senator, is running for governor.

Under Colorado law, candidates for U.S. Senate and governor must gather at least 1,500 valid signatures from each of the state’s eight congressional districts. Both candidates cleared that hurdle comfortably, with Hickenlooper submitting 17,322 total signatures, of which 14,905 were validated, while Bennet submitted 17,255 signatures, of which 14,851 were confirmed.

Petitioning on to the ballot allows the two men to forgo the caucus and assembly process, whereby candidates must participate in precinct caucuses, lobby for support of delegates, and then must garner at least 30 percent of the vote at the state party assembly.

The Colorado Democratic Party’s information page for the March 28 state assembly in Pueblo shows Hickenlooper’s main challenger, State Senator Julie Gonzales, as going the caucus and assembly route, as well as Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser, who is also running for governor.

Gonzales is currently enjoying momentum leading into the assembly, having recently picked up a significant endorsement from the far-left Indivisible Colorado Action Network.

Other candidates that have petitioned on to the primary ballot thus far include both Democrat Jessica Killin and Republican incumbent Jeff Crank in the 5th Congressional District race, Democrats Shannon Bird and Evan Munsing in the 8th Congressional District race, and Republican candidate for governor Barb Kirkmeyer.
