UPDATE: The Colorado Secretary of State on April 14 reported attorney Michael Dougherty and Hetal Doshy successfully petitioned on the primary ballot, making the Democrat contest for attorney general a four-candidate race.
PUEBLO–Colorado Democrats gathered for their party assembly in Pueblo over the weekend, with nearly 1,400 delegates casting votes to send candidates on to the June 30 statewide primary election.
Candidates needed to garner at least 30 percent of the vote to advance, with the top-vote getter appearing first on the ballot
Notably absent were big-name Democrats John Hickenlooper, running for re-election to the U.S. Senate, and Michael Bennet, a sitting U.S. senator running for governor. As previously reported by Complete Colorado, the two men successfully petitioned on the primary ballot, allowing them to forgo the caucus and assembly process.
Here’s the results for statewide races.
Governor
The gubernational primary will be a two-man battle between Bennet and Attorney General Phil Wieser, who snagged an overwhelming 90% of the vote.
In his speech to the delegates, Weiser called his opponent the “candidate of Washington,” backed by out-of-state billionaires. He went on to tout his numerous, ongoing legal scuffles as attorney general against the Trump administration. “I sued this lawless bully administration 63 times in counting,” he boasted.
U.S. Senate
Incumbent John Hickenlooper will primary against State Senator Julie Gonzalez, who hails from the far-left wing of the party. Gonzalez received 75% of the vote at the assembly, placing her at the top of the ballot.
Gonzalez made no bones about her intention to oppose the Trump administration should she be elected to the Senate. “The world is on fire and every day we wake up dreading whatever fresh hell this fascist administration has wrought upon us,” she said in her speech.
Gonzalez recently picked up a big progressive endorsement from the far-left Indivisible Colorado Action Network.
Attorney General
Current Secretary of State, Jena Griswold, took top line on the primary ballot, with nearly 42% of the vote. David Seligan, executive director of a progressive legal non-profit and practicing attorney, trailed Griswold with just under 41%, while Boulder County District Attorney Michael Dougherty finished third with nearly 18%.
Dougherty, however, is still in the running, having previously submitted signatures to petition on the ballot. His more than 10% of the delegate vote keeps him the game, pending succesful review of his petition signatures.
A fourth attorney general hopeful, Hetal Doshi, bypassed the caucus and assembly, having submitted petition signatures, which are still under review.
Secretary of State
Amanda Gonzalez, the sitting Jefferson County Clerk and Recorder, won over the delegates favor with just over 63% of the vote. Her opponent will be State Senator Jessie Danielson, who received slightly below 37%.
Treasurer
State Senator Jeff Bridges will run unopposed for Colorado treasurer, receiving over 43.7% of the vote.
His main opposition headed into the assembly, State Rep. Brianna Titone, fell just shy of qualifying with 29%, with John Mikos also out of the running with 27%.
Colorado Republicans will hold their assembly in Pueblo on April 11.
