DENVER – A Former Victor Marx supporter, campaign volunteer, and candidate for a Colorado House seat has jumped ship in favor of Barbara Kirkmeyer after a recent debate on 9News featuring all three Republican candidates for Governor.
Republican Joseph Montoya, who is running to represent House District 1 in Denver and Jefferson Counties, posted a long assessment of the debate on Facebook in which he said he witnessed the “embodiment of effective governance and informed leadership that will bolster Colorado’s prosperity for all citizens.”
Montoya said he was also not impressed with Rep. Scott Bottoms, saying his answers were not where they needed to be for a governor and that he leans too far to the right.
But his change of heart came in his support for Marx.
Montoya said although he has felt the energy and enthusiasm of Marx, helped him gather signatures to put him on the ballot and has encouraged others to vote for him, Marx “failed to have solid answers to solving problems Coloradans are facing today.”
“I personally don’t think he has the experience to handle such a complex and highly legal system without learning and studying the law,” he said.
In the end, Montoya said Kirkmeyer presented herself as a “real leader.”
“She explained the negative points the (sic) claimed against her and did something you don’t see in politics, that’s listening to her constituents,” he said. “I commend her for her integrity. … Out of all (three) she’s got the strength, knowledge, and experience to do this job.
“I truly believe she will be able to cross party lines and get real bipartisanship back to Colorado. She explains her plans and has real leadership to back it up. I’m sorry not sorry but for me it Barb all the way for here on out.”
On her Facebook page, Kirkmeyer thanked Montoya for coming around to see her as the preferred candidate.
“”I’m sorry not sorry” that you are now on #TeamKirkmeyer,” Kirkmeyer posted. “The fact that you spent time helping another campaign and still came to this conclusion means a lot.”
Colorado’s primary election is June 30.
