WASHINGTON D.C. – Colorado’s 8th Congressional District Rep. Gabe Evans on Wednesday took an opportunity during House Homeland Security Committee hearings to question Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Markwayne Mullin over how his department handles issues of sanctuary cities, public safety, backlogs and constitutional protections during Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations.
Evans’ questions came just days after he joined House Judiciary Committee Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio and GOP Rep. Tom McClintock in letters to Denver’s elected district attorney, chief of police, and sheriff demanding information on their offices’ compliance with local sanctuary policies that, according to Evans “prioritize criminal and illegal aliens over American citizens and threaten public safety.”
“Despite our state making up 2 percent of the entire U.S. population, 10 percent of all human trafficking in the U.S. happens here,” Evans told Complete Colorado. “The statistics are a direct consequence of Denver Democrats’ sanctuary state laws that protect criminals, limit law enforcement, and have diminished public safety.”
He asked Mullin to work with immigrants in Colorado – many of which are in his district – who have been here for years on visas to renew those documents in a smooth and more efficient manner.
Evans told Complete Colorado he will do whatever necessary to work to make it easier for law abiding immigrants to remain in the U.S., adding that for years, “Biden’s disastrous open border policies allowed foreign terrorist organizations, gangs, and criminals to flood our country,” he said. “That, coupled with Democrat sanctuary states like Colorado, have caused crime, overdose, and human trafficking rates to continue rising nearly two years after his departure.”
He said it is his also his duty to ensure everyone works collaboratively with DHS to ensure the safety of Coloradans and Americans across the nation. “Under the leadership of Secretary Mullin, DHS is restoring law and order, focusing on the worst of the worst, and refocusing the department on its core mission: putting the security of the American people first,” Evans said.
