The two dive deep into the idea idea that meaningful political change often begins not under Colorado’s gold dome, but at city councils, school boards, and local ballot boxes.
Wark shares his experience helping lead Greeley Demands Better, a grassroots campaign that challenged a proposed billion-dollar city-owned hotel, water park, and sports stadium development. Wark and other residents questioned the financial risk to taxpayers and what they viewed as a lack of transparency. After gathering thousands of signatures and overcoming legal and procedural challenges, the group successfully forced the issue onto the ballot, where voters put a halt to the project.
Caldara and Wark examine other recent citizen-led efforts in places like Lakewood, where residents successfully pushed back against city zoning decisions.
Wark lays out the process creating platforms focused on state and local issues, noting social media and leveraging technology allows individuals to organize and influence politics, bypassing parties and other traditional political institutions.
